What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is a systems based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness. Where traditional medicine continues to give medication after medication to treat illness, functional medicine works on the dynamics that are causing the illness most commonly crap food, toxins and stress. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health.

Meet the Practitioner

Jennifer Piermarini MSN, NP-C, AFMC Practitioner

Hi, I'm Jen! I'm an Applied Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and a Family Nurse Practitioner with over 14 years of experience in urgent care and acute care and 20 years working in health care. I graduated from Salem State University in 2002 with a Bachelors in Nursing becoming a Registered nurse. I spent 7 years working in labor and delivery and early into my career I knew I wanted to be able to have. greater impact on the health of my patients and become a nurse practitioner. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston with a Masters in Nursing as a Family Nurse practitioner in 2008. Upon working as a nurse practitioner I soon realized there must be something more than just handing out pills to patients to fix their illness. I struggled with my own health issues including ongoing fatigue, anxiety, weight gain, asthma and chronic allergies which lead to my discovery of Functional Medicine in the fall of 2020. I quickly learned that that there was another way;  preventing and reversing illness through identifying and correcting the root causes of disease would help people be able to feel their best and live healthier lives.  I am extremely passionate about helping women to optimal health.
